Unlike the not to distant past, Today's cabling standards are very complex and ever changing. First you have to understand that standards compliance is not mandatory nor are they enforced by any agency. Standards are developed by many different organizations and sometimes conflict. For communication circuits it is generally accepted to comply with the ANSI/EIA/TIA Standards for certification. OnSite does all its certification based on these standards.
At Onsite Software Support, Ltd. we adhere to standards down to our patch cables. The requirements and specifications for patch cables are detailed in the ANSI/EIA/TIA 568 A Standard. The standards allows 20% more attenuation for these cables than horizontal CAT-V cables. For example the standard specifies that all patch cables have performance markings printed on them. Patch cords have to be stranded cables and shall be 0.8mm to 1mm in order to fit into a modular plug. The patch cords have to comply to the same color-coding as the horizontal UTP cabling.
